Moving

Posted on Sunday 9 March 2008

We have all discussed simplifying our lives, purging what we don’t need, and evaluating how we spend money to live a more frugal life. Wolf came to me today and said he wanted to delete Tormentid and move Howling Hill to a free hosting site.

I like being an independent blogger but at almost $100 a year it’s not really…well, frugal. So he’ll be deleting this domain. Fear not! he did move Howling Hill over to WordPress so the new site is here on WordPress. Please update your blogrolls. I don’t want to lose any of my blogger friends.

And Then There Were Two

Posted on Friday 7 March 2008

Jaxsun Trifang Moon, our beloved Siberian Husky, died today. He was in liver failure.

Jaxsun was the first dog I’ve ever had. Honestly, I didn’t think I could love a dog but oh how wrong I was! He woofed his way into my heart almost immediately.

He lived with us for five years and I hope he enjoyed them. I hope we were good dog people. I hope he will not harbor ill will toward us for ending his life so he wouldn’t suffer any longer.

I’ll see you at the rainbow bridge my beloved pooch.

If you feel inclined, please donate to Patriot Siberian Husky Rescue in his name. PSHR is the organization who paired us with Jaxsun. They’re a good group of people who do great work for Huskies.

Friday Ark. Go check out happy stories!

The Great Melt

Posted on Wednesday 5 March 2008

Those of us in the Northeast have been doing a lot of complaining about the weather. Here in Central New Hampshire it’s been just horrific. Cold, icy, snowy. Everyone has spring fever in the worst way. We’re just weary of Old Man Winter and his antics.

It’s been feeling like Spring would never come. During every snowstorm I think to myself this is the last storm of the season. But it never was. We always got another storm, more snow and ice.

Today was no different. When I came home from the board meeting it was raining out. When I got up this morning it was freezing rain. We got about 3 inches or so. But just a few minutes ago I looked out the window and saw something I haven’t seen in a while: blue sky. And that’s when I heard it: The Great Melt.

Despite being pretty cold and damp out I have the front door open, along with the window in front of my desk. And I can hear the snow and ice melting. I can hear The Great Melt. It’s the first real hint of spring all year.

I planted some seeds yesterday and the day before. Wolf got me some more potting cells so I can continue to plant. We made love last night as a way to bless the seeds, to bless our garden, with fertility and love. Of abundance and warmth.

Spring is here. Old Man Winter may fight Mother Earth on this if he wants, but he’s descending and he knows it. Mother will bloom before our eyes, opening herself to us. We must bloom before her eyes and open ourselves to her in return.

Tomatoes and Squash

Posted on Tuesday 4 March 2008

Today I planted three different types of squash and a bunch of tomatoes. I can’t do anymore planting until I get more containers. But, oh!, does it feel good to have my hands in some soil.

The weather has turned warmer. It’s raining out so I’m hoping it’ll wash this damnable snow away.

Onions and Cucumbers

Posted on Monday 3 March 2008

Today I started putting my seeds in some potting soil. Not the way I usually do it, but the way I chose to this year. In the past many of the seeds I put to sprout didn’t make it so I decided to start by just putting the seeds into some soil to see if that works any better. I chose potting soil because it’s the only thing they had at Agway. I’ll have to remember to pull some soil out of the garden this year so I can start in our soil, not potting soil.

Anyways, I planted Walla Walla onions and three different types of cucumbers: National Pickling, Mexican Sour Gherkin, and…maybe just two different types. Tomorrow I will start on the tomatoes and other seeds.

Spring!

Snow Snow Go Away

Posted on Wednesday 27 February 2008

Jaxsun enjoyed laying on the 6+ foot snowbank the other day when Sun was out and actually melting some of this infernal snow.

jaxsun feb 2008

We got another foot of snow last night.

LET ME IN! Feb 2008
Francesca and Harley are not amused.

You’ll note how Francesca was trying to *dig* her way into the the house. I think we’ll be digging *out* if this crap keeps up.

Welcome Friday Ark and Carnival of the Cats readers! Yes, after a long hiatus, we here at Howling Hill have returned. It’s good to be back.

Which Came First, the Chicken or the Tractor?

Posted on Saturday 23 February 2008

Since I’m not working for The (Wo)Man I said to Wolf I want us to get chickens this year. He wants to wait until next year because he wants to have a chicken tractor built before we get chicks.

Those of you with chickens, what do you think: Should the tractor be built first or should the chicks come first?

Edited to add: it’s snowing out again. We’re to get another 4-8 inches.

This is me about to go postal.

I’ve had enough with winter.

That’s my picnic table. The small hump next to it is a chair.

I had to put a towel between the two doors so catch any melting snow. However, the air temperature has not gotten about 30 in weeks.

Not Much to Say

Posted on Wednesday 20 February 2008

I haven’t been posting much because there isn’t much to say. It’s cold. It’s icy. It’s snowy. Spring is very far away.

I haven’t started my seeds because I can’t get into the shed where my supplies are.
